Statement
of Purpose
The aim of the Raymond Aron Society is to honor the late
great French social theorist by a variety of means: (1) Encouraging
publication and translation of the major works of Aron in the English
language. (2) Issuing articles, reviews and occasional papers on Aron’s
writings and work that have a special bearing on the Anglo-American
condition. (3) Holding conferences and establishing lectures that bridge
the gap between European and American varieties of Western Civilization.
(4) Examining the relationship of social science, history, and the study of
politics and policy – with a special emphasis on the Aronian Perspective.
The Raymond Aron Society will seek to establish ties
with other like-minded activities, that honor past masters of the social
sciences, history and philosophy, and display shared values and interests.
We will work especially to develop fraternal liaison with the French Societé
des Amis de Aron. The Society is non-restrictive in its membership, and
makes no effort to impose a uniform code of interpretation on the work of
Aron or his associates. The Raymond Aron Society is not a replacement for
other organizational activities. However, it will seek to development
panels to examine the work of Aron at venues like those at American, Canadian
and British political science and history associations.
Given the high degree of informality, the Raymond Aron
Society will not (at the outset at least) be a dues paying association.
Rather, it will seek to advance the purposes and reasons for its existence
through voluntary donations and foundation funds. The Association will be
organized as a not-for-profit association, in order to qualify for public
and private funding. Such costs as associated with or that maintain
communication among members of the RAS will be financed exclusively
and voluntarily by the members, and in particular the members of the
executive board. The Society is to commence its work in the Spring 2004
with a meeting of the executive board in Boston, Massachusetts.
